McPhee Electric was hired by the City of Hartford to replace the former board of education building with a new state-of-the-art public safety complex. This new 146,000 square foot facility serves as headquarters for the city’s police and fire departments, 911 and 311 dispatch, and other public safety personnel.
Its historic design conceals the high-tech installation of the specialized systems, which include:
- 1670kVA Rotary UPS
- 400kW Fuel Cell (Grid Independent)
- 800kW Generator
- Prime construction of 100’ steel communications transmission tower, antennas and cabling
A Particularly difficult aspect of this project was that it was built in a very wet area. Structural design of this project required the installation of an extraordanry amount of spread footings.
The challenge came about with the installation of the extensive underground electrical work required to construct switchgear rooms and building support. We accomplished this feat via "BIM" and "Trimble" robot thereby actually constructung the underground and marking out locations and elevations on site electronical and via GPS. This was a very successful strategy that allowed us to install a very large quantity of undergroud conduits and hit very small and precise targets way ahead of structures being installed.
