Middle Tennessee State University is a comprehensive coeducational public university in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Designed by Street Dixon Rick Architecture and Thomas Miller and Partners, the Student Union facility at Middle Tennessee State University is a 197,180 square foot student gathering and meeting place and offers students another campus dining option.
The first floor accommodates a bookstore, copy center, game room and a 640 seat food court as well as a separate casual dining restaurant serving an additional 100 students. The second floor includes a ballroom, parliamentary room, video theater, computer center conference and meeting rooms as well as student lounges. The third floor contains offices for Student Involvement & Leadership, Student Government Association and Student Unions & Programming.
This impressive building has a 4000 amp service with a 400kw generator and 2 ATS’s. The distribution consisted of 24 transformers ranging from 30kvw – 300kva in size. There are 63 sections of panelboards and switchboards. The lighting package is a custom package with 80+ different types of fixtures. Several fixtures were built specifically for this project. The 13,000 square foot ballroom has an intensive dimming system including one-150 amp dimming board, three- 400 amp dimming boards, three-400 amp company switches, and three 200 amp company switches. There are also four- 400 amp company switches in the outside quads. The electrical contact for this facility included the fire alarm system and the infrastructure for Tele/Data, security, access control, and the intensive AV package.
This BIM project with all trades involved proved to be a success. Trades coordination took place months before install was to start. The project included lighting control system, dimming system, Micro-shade integration, advance security system, access control and integrated BAS Room.
