United Illuminating Singer Substation

Power & Utility > Substation

McPhee acted as overall Prime constructor for this one-of-a kind, 345kV GIS substation installation project which was a key component of a major New England project called the Middletown/Norwalk Transmission Project.

The Singer Substation project’s scope of work included providing all site civil work, all high voltage installation (both 345kV and 115kV equipment switchyard), GIS enclosure building, and P&C enclosure building. McPhee installed the following electrical aspects: 345/115kV 630 MVA transformers, 345 kV reactors, sixteen 345 kV GIS C/B & GIB arrangement, two 115kV XLPE circuits (3cable per phase) and duct banks with terminations/splicing to two remote substations, installation of grounding, P&C equipment/relay/panels/cabling, SCADA/RTU systems, transformer fire suppression deluge system, building, testing & commissioning assistance.

McPhee acted in a general contractor’s role for complete site development which included foundations, structural steel and concrete reinforced building structure and decorative pre-cast exterior wall erection, mechanical/hvac systems, fire alarm and fire suppressions systems and underground utilities construction on the project site and through congested city streets.

At the height of the project, McPhee managed over 150 tradespeople - including more than 60 electricians on this very tight site. The unique configuration of a high voltage, GIS built within an enclosed structure on a busy city block, provided substantial logistical and coordination challenges. The project was completed ahead of schedule with a commendable safety record of over 300,000 man-hours worked without a recordable accident.
